Crucial Crew event for year 6 children
From the 4th to 7th October 2021, Herts Mind Network’s Children and Young People’s Team were invited by St Albans City & District Council to take part in their Crucial Crew event.
Hertfordshire Crucial Crew is an event dedicated to helping Year 6 children (10-11 year olds) keep themselves safe. More than 10,000 children take part in Crucial Crew programmes every year, learning about personal and general safety in an engaging, interactive and positive way.
It offers these students a chance to gain an insight into life skills, lessons in personal safety, and crime prevention in a monitored and safe yet immersive environment.
The students spent time taking part in 10 unique scenarios offered as part of the event. Some of these included: Fire safety, cyber bullying, knives and gang crime, first aid, drugs and alcohol, road safety, electrical safety, water safety and mental health.
As a team, we spent time creating a thought provoking mental health scenario which we delivered to the students. We provided a space to discuss and support them to find solutions. The key messages for them to take away were highlighting the importance of talking about our mental health and feelings, asking if someone is okay, and to always remember to Be Kind.
It was a really successful few days and as an organisation, we felt privileged to be a part of such a great event. We are really thankful to St Albans City & District Council for inviting us, and we hope to return next year!
